I hold most of the professors I had in college in really really high esteem, but it still blows my mind that there are people out there who know them and respect them as these fantastic designers and artists and technologists. They have very real followings and very real success and it’s just so amazing that I had the chance to learn from them. And it’s beyond hilarious that there are people who I’ve seen around the internet and on tumblr and other places post about my professors and cite their works and I’m just sitting in my apartment thinking back like, “Oh yeah Joe’s cool. Brought brownies to class once. Great day.” Joe isn’t actually the name of any of my professors, but the fact that I’m on a first-name basis with these people and that I got to know them and learn from them is really a blessing.

An end to zero tolerance for willful defiance in L.A. schools?

California schools have long brought about swift punishments for instances of so-called willful defiance, which have disproportionally led to suspensions of many minority students not just in our home state, but nationwide.

Take the case of Damien Valentine, a Manual Arts Senior High School sophomore fighting against the practice, who says that several such punishments earlier in his school accomplished nothing but setting him back.

So just what is “willful defiance?”

That offense is now widely criticized as an arbitrary catchall for any behavior a teacher finds objectionable, such as repeatedly tapping feet on the floor, refusing to remove a hat or failing to wear the school uniform. It accounted for 48% of 710,000 suspensions issued in California in 2011-12, prompting both state and local efforts to restrict its use in disciplinary actions.

A resolution moving through Los Angeles County would make L.A. Unified the first school district in California to ban suspensions for the aforementioned offenses.

Said Tonna Onyendu of the Liberty Hill Foundation, a Los Angeles nonprofit:

“This will be a transformational shift. Instead of punishing students, we’re going to engage them.”

It’s weird that I’m disappointed Community got picked up for a 5th season. But it’s not if you know how I and lots of other people feel about the show. Without the elements that once made it meaningful it’s just going to continue to dissolve onscreen. The sad part is that now that it’s lost its flavor people are watching. Maybe if people had been watching during the second season Dan Harmon wouldn’t have been fired. Maybe if they had watched during the first season it wouldn’t have deviated from how wonderful it was back then.

After the season finale last night I came to the conclusion that maybe the show did need a movie. A movie probably would have been more conclusive than that finale. It would probably have been better than the whole season because it wouldn’t have struggled to bring up new things to resolve instead of putting to rest the ones it hadn’t already. Who knows, maybe Harmon and the Russo’s would have helmed it. They still might. But with the show so far gone I don’t think a movie would save it.

I don’t know if I’ll watch this next season. I probably will even though I know it’ll put me in a bad mood. Everyone who started out big on the show is gone. Harmon. The Russo brothers. A slew of writers. Tristram Shapeero who only directed 4 episodes across the first two seasons almost single-handedly directed the 4th one. Not a single episode this season was written by someone who wrote an episode for the first season.

It’s gone. Community is gone. And yet now it lives on. I wish the cast didn’t have so much fun filming so that they could see what it’s turned into.

I’m frustrated because I want everything I do and everything I make to be meaningful or thought-provoking in some way. And I don’t just mean like, “Oh wow, that’s a deep lyric in a pop song.” meaningful. I mean the whole project itself has to have a reason for being brought to life. Unless I have a reason for saying it there’s no reason to say it. Now, what I’m saying isn’t necessarily what’s meaningful, but why it’s being said should always be. For a few years I haven’t really done any piece that doesn’t mean something and I’m proud of that. But I want to work with other people on this stuff and I don’t think I know anyone who shares my same attention to concept. So my choices are to work with others and make stuff that I think is conceptual crap or I can work alone. Or I can convince them to think deeper about what they’re doing, huh? I think I might try that one.
